Kintsugi:

to rejoin with gold

An IVY & GAULT exhibition featuring authentic kintsugi works by Japanese artist Ai Moliya

Kintsugi is the traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken, chipped or cracked ceramics & decorating the joined parts with gold. Apparently worthless shards are transformed into beautiful works of art through kintsugi repair. This process makes sturdy repairs using non-toxic, food-safe materials. It is highly practical & allows people to take continued pleasure in the use of their beloved ceramic works. The distinctive aspect of Kintsugi repair is that it revives formerly broken parts with new beauty. In the time-honored process, there is a culture of appreciating a new beauty in the broken.

Do you have a ceramic piece that has been chipped or broken? Bring it along to the opening night & Ai can tell you an estimate of a kintsugi repair fee.

OPENING Friday 15th September | 5pm

Ai was Born in Okayama, Japan. She studied painting & graphic design in Kobe before working as a graphic designer in Tokyo. In 2016, Ai learnt fundamental kintsugi techniques. Since 2017 she has been working as a specialist kintsugi artist based in Berlin, while continuing the development of her work as a graphic designer & painter. Both are authentic  materials for traditional kintsugi & completely food-safe for repairs to functional ceramics.
