frequently asked questions

  • Who becomes members at the studio?

Our artist members have very different backgrounds, & make a wide variety of ceramics. Some are longstanding professionals with many years of experience; others are just at the point of transitioning from amateur to professional. What we share is a mutual love of the process, & a desire to focus on our creative practice in the supportive company of like-minded artists.

  • How can I become a member?

Fill out this brief form here to begin the process of applying to become a member. Please note: we only have ten full-time members at any given time in order to make sure the space does not become too crowded. If there are no places currently available we will add you to the waiting list & you will be the first to know when applications re-open.

  • What is the application process for membership?

First fill out the initial application form here to register your interest, & give us some idea of you, your background, & your creative practice. If it seems like a good fit & there are spaces currently available, then you will be invited to come to the studio for a chat with our Studio Director, Sonya Strathmann. The process is guided by our desire to build a warm, welcoming, focussed community of dedicated artists. We are less interested in what stage of your professional journey you are at, & more in what inspires you, & your passion to learn & create.

  • How do I join a class?

Visit our classes page here to find out what’s on & book your place. Our classes can sell out so if there’s no places left make sure to join our mailing list to be the first to hear of similar classes in the future.

  • Who comes to your classes?

We welcome anyone of any age & background who has an enthusiasm to learn ceramics. Some people who come are complete beginners, others are advanced artists who are still eager to hone their skills. Simply select the class that seems exciting for you & we look forward to welcoming you in the studio. If you are unsure if a particular class is a good fit for you then please contact us to ask & we will happily help you work it out.

  • What should I bring to / wear for class?

We provide aprons & all the clay & tools that you will need. However, working with clay is a messy business so you may like to wear casual shoes & clothes that can easily be washed - just in case the apron doesn’t completely protect you!

  • What language do you use?

As our Berlin community is very international, we tend to use English as a common language. However, our teachers are fluent in both German & English, & we are more than happy to teach in German. If you are more comfortable with working in German, please let your teacher know when you arrive & they will make sure to include German instructions throughout the session.

  • Can I get a refund?

Bookings for classes, workshops, & trainings are binding & non-refundable. We understand, however, that unexpected life events happen. So if you become ill, or need to cancel your session for an equivalent reason, please do contact us. We will do our best to swap your booking to another equivalent session, but cannot guarantee that this will be available.

  • What happens if my work breaks?

Creating ceramics is not a guaranteed process: works are fragile & can easily crack or break at different stages. Seeing how - & if - a work turns out is part of the excitement, surprise, & sometimes disappointment. Given the nature of the process, we do not take responsibility for any broken or unsuccessful works.

  • Do you take interns?

We do take interns & would be interested to hear from you. Internships are created on a case-by-case basis: the exact terms, length, & focus of the internship depends on your level of experience, what you are seeking to learn, & how it might be possible to tailor an internship experience to your needs. Please contact us to open up a conversation.

  • What are your opening hours?

The studio is open for our members 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year so there is often someone at the studio no matter the time of day or night. However, we do not guarantee certain opening hours for those who wish to come & browse our current works for sale. If you live nearby, do pass by & you will likely be able to drop in. If that’s not possible, then please feel free to contact us to arrange an appointment for a specified time & date. We look forward to meeting you.
