Workshops

Kintsugi is the traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken, chipped, or cracked ceramics & decorating the joined parts with gold. The process is used to make sturdy repairs using non-toxic, food-safe materials, allowing people to take continued pleasure in the use of their beloved ceramic works.

The 500-year-old practice is not only aesthetic & functional, but philosophical too. By gluing a broken object back together, and painting the cracks with gold, repair becomes art, and the piece's flaws become its most beautiful parts.

We are happy to be hosting expert & artist Ai Moliya in a three-part Kintsugi workshop. She will guide us through the techniques of the ancient art & introduce us to its history. Ai will teach traditional methods using authentic materials.

*Small ceramic plates are provided by our studio for this workshop. If participants wish to handle their own small chipped ceramics to repair they must be brought to the first session. The size should be no larger than 10x10x10 cm and the chip's size should be no larger than 2x1x0.5 cm. Ai will access whether it meets the workshop content.

This workshop deals with chips on the edges of small plates in a three-part workshop, over the course of three weeks. In the first session, the chipped areas will be filled in; in the second session, the filled areas will be prepared by scraping and polishing. The surface is then coated with urushi-lacquer to make it smooth. In the last session, the piece is coated with gold powder.

Ai was Born in Okayama, Japan. She studied painting & graphic design in Kobe before working as a graphic designer in Tokyo. In 2016, Ai learnt fundamental kintsugi techniques. Since 2017 she has been working as a specialist kintsugi artist based in Berlin, while continuing the development of her work as a graphic designer & painter. The main materials which she uses for kintsugi repair are Japanese urushi lacquer & real gold powder. Both are authentic  materials for traditional kintsugi & completely food-safe for repairs to functional ceramics.
